Compounding is the practice of preparing customized medications to fit the unique needs of a patient. Everything from anti-nausea medication to cancer therapy is compounded in specialized pharmacies like Custom Rx.
History
Compounding has been a part of pharmacy in America since the early 1800s when the first drugstores opened. Well into the mid-1900s, compounding was necessary for nearly half of all prescriptions. That changed during the Industrial Revolution when mass production transformed pharmacy into the industry we see today. Despite this change, compounding continued to grow and evolve.
With today's high-tech equipment and intensely specialized training, modern compounding is experiencing a rebirth. Unsatisfied with the "one-size-fits-all" approach of mass-produced drugs, more and more physicians recognize the benefit of pharmacy compounding and are happy to prescribe custom medications.
Options
Giving patients options is what Custom Rx specializes in. Pain management and pediatric medication are good examples of how compounding can improve patient care.
Options for pain management include topical creams and gels applied directly to the area of pain. Direct application reduces the potential for the irritating and harmful side effects often associated with pain medication.
Children present a challenge to adult-only dosing common with many commercially manufactured drugs. Fortunately, compounding is able to meet the challenge by creating custom doses based on weight. We can even make medications with kid-friendly flavors or in fun forms such as popsicles and lollipops.
These are just two brief examples of how compounding can open up a world of options. What can we do for you?
